What to Do with Chicken Neck: A Simple Yet Delicious Recipe

Ingredients

  • (2 lbs) Chicken Necks
  • (2 TBSP) Extra virgin olive oil
  • (1) Large onion, chopped
  • (3) Cloves garlic, minced
  • (2) Large carrots, diced
  • (2) Celery stalks, diced
  • (1) Bell pepper, chopped
  • (1 cup) Tomatoes, chopped
  • (1 cup) Seven Sons Chicken Broth
  • (1 TSP) Dried thyme
  • (1 TSP) Dried rosemary
  • (1) Bay leaf
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • (optional) Fresh parsley

Directions

How to Cook Chicken Necks

  1. Rinse chicken necks. Using cold water, rinse chicken necks, then pat dry with paper towel.
  2. Prepare Dutch oven or pot: Heat two tablespoons of olive oil over medium-high heat. 
  3. Brown chicken necks: Add chicken necks to the prepared pot and brown evenly on all sides – approximately 8 minutes total. Remove the chicken necks from the pot and set them aside.
  4. Add other ingredients to pot: Add the chopped onion and garlic, cooking until they become fragrant and soft. Add the carrots, celery, and bell pepper, cooking for 5 minutes. Next, add the chopped tomatoes and stir gently for an additional minute.
  5. Add seasonings: Sprinkle in the salt, pepper, thyme, rosemary, and bay leaf, then put the chicken necks back in the pot. Pour in the chicken broth, ensuring the necks are mostly submerged. Give the whole thing a good stir. 
  6. Reduce heat and simmer. Turn the heat down to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 90 minutes–or until the chicken necks are tender. 
  7. Remove bay leaf: When the chicken necks are done, remove the bay leaf, put the stew in a bowl, and garnish with fresh parsley. Serve as is, with rice, or alongside creamy mashed potatoes.

How Long Should You Boil Chicken Necks For?

While you can cook chicken necks by boiling them for 20-30 minutes, the best way to cook them is low and slow. This method will get you tender, tasty meat. First, brown your chicken in a Dutch oven for about 8 minutes, then remove. Then, fry various vegetables and herbs in the same pot before adding chicken broth. Place the chicken necks back in the pot and let simmer for 90 minutes. 

What Herbs Go Great with Chicken Neck Meat?

Chicken neck meat is wonderfully versatile, so you can experiment with a variety of flavor combinations. If you love roast chicken, try infusing your stew with rosemary, garlic, and thyme. For an Asian twist, ginger, soy, and lemongrass pair together wonderfully. Another favorite is a combination of smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, and cinnamon for a warming, barbecue-inspired dinner.

Absolutely! To make this recipe in a slow cooker instead of a Dutch oven, follow all the steps above, using your slow cooker to brown the onions and vegetables. When it comes to step 6, you’ll need to change the cooking time to high for 3 to 4 hours, or until the meat falls apart at the touch of your fork.

I had heard of this thing called bacon jam a couple years ago and it definitely intrigued me. Don’t ask me why it took me that long to actually make it myself - trust me, after tasting it, I’m wondering the same thing. Bacon jam is a great and simple way to elevate the flavor of your recipes. And you WILL enjoy it! This recipe is one of a kind and a combination of some of my favorite flavors. You really can't go wrong with bacon or dill pickle, am I right? The slaw really brings a refreshing element to this recipe and in my opinion completes it, but if it's not your gig, you can do away with it. I used ground pork and made small patties for this recipe, but you can most certainly substitute pulled pork as well. With that said, get to cooking so you can get to eating! Enjoy!
